Falls are the leading cause of death from injury among seniors. Risk increases with age, and one in three seniors falls each year. Of this group, 25 percent of those who fall suffer moderate to severe injuries, including hip fractures. By 2020, the annual direct and indirect cost of fall injuries is expected to reach nearly $55 billion. However, falls in seniors are largely preventable.
Our mission is to conduct research that will ultimately reduce the risk of falls and promote independent mobility as adults age.
We work towards this mission as an interdisciplinary team by exploring cardiovascular, neurological, musculoskeletal, environmental and drug-related causes of falls and mobility disorders. This research has lead to the development of novel interventions that help older individuals overcome these conditions.
